Ensuring safe and smooth operations at new mega terminal

The Abu Dhabi International Midfield Terminal Complex, one of the largest terminal buildings in the world, is designed to accommodate over 40 million passengers annually and handle 50+ aircraft stands. The complex is a key part of Abu Dhabi’s strategy to enhance connectivity and support economic diversification, with a focus on both passenger and cargo facilities.

As part of a major expansion, the terminal aims to meet the growing demands of the United Arab Emirates’ business and tourism sectors. Deerns contributed to the project by designing systems that align with the terminal’s high architectural standards, ensuring world-class comfort, security, and services.

Deerns Solutions

Deerns played a key role in designing the telecommunication, security and aircraft handling systems for the Abu Dhabi International Midfield Terminal Complex. Deerns implemented the ‘Clean Apron Concept‘, using underground systems for aircraft ground power, pre-conditioned air and fuel, enhancing the lifespan of safety and equipment in harsh conditions. Deerns also designed advanced airfield lighting systems and integrated IT systems to optimise airport operations and minimise passenger waiting times. The security solutions included high-density camera coverage with video analytics for efficient monitoring. All systems were carefully coordinated with the architects to ensure seamless integration into the terminal’s design while meeting sustainability goals and Estidama’s Two Pearl Rating.
