Terminal and Runway Extension
Kuwait International Airport (KIA), located 16km south of Kuwait City, underwent a major expansion to accommodate growing air traffic and establish itself as a regional hub in the Gulf. The project included a new terminal designed by Foster & Partners, runway extensions and upgrades to airport infrastructure to handle increased passenger capacity.
The first phase met traffic projections for the following decade, while the second phase expanded capacity to 55 million passengers annually. The completed expansion features a state-of-the-art terminal, Terminal 2, with 30 gates and flexible stands, setting new standards in airport design and comfort.

Deerns Solutions
Deerns provided advanced airport systems for Kuwait International Airport, focusing on high-quality, innovative solutions that meet international standards and local regulations. Deerns designed the security systems with a strong emphasis on passenger privacy and comfort, implementing state-of-the-art access control, screening, and video surveillance systems.
Additionally, Deerns introduced the Clean Apron Concept, using fixed apron systems to reduce collisions and staff requirements while minimising weather-related damage. The telecommunications infrastructure supports all operations with a single, converged network, ensuring flexibility and high availability across the terminal. These solutions integrate seamlessly into the airport’s architecture, enhancing both functionality and passenger experience.
